What is the CFA Program
all about? The CFA designation is said to be the gold standard in the area of
finance and investments, allowing the holder access to the goodwill that men
and women have built over the years in the practice of ethical and professional
investment management and research. The program itself is administered by the
CFA Institute, with headquarters in the United States.
Requirements for
designation
What are the
requirements before a person is allowed to use the CFA designation? In order to
earn it, a person must be of good moral standing, must have at least four years
of qualified work experience in the area of investment decision-making, and
must serially pass three annual examinations on a wide variety of topics
related to the investment profession. The work experience can be accrued even
while taking the exam so people who are thinking of a career shift into
investment management and research can pursue the examinations even while they
are now focusing on redefining their careers.
The CFA program itself
is a self-study, graduate-level program and so the degree of difficulty is a
cut-above a bachelor’s program. Included among the topics are financial
statement analysis (heavy accounting required!), quantitative analysis (time
value of money, statistics, econometrics etc), financial derivatives, equity
analysis, fixed income analysis, portfolio management, plus a healthy dose of
ethics and investment performance measurement. Exams are regularly scheduled
every June for Levels 1 to 3 but there is also a special December exam for
Level 1 (all available locally in the Philippines) .
